UPDATE: the Texas State Senate has given final passage to SB 17, the Texas Professional Protection Act. The bill must now pass the Texas House. Take action to contact your State Representative today!
Licensed professionals in Texas and across the nation are increasingly threatened for simply working in accordance with their faith. Leftist associations like the American Bar Association and American Counseling Association have put forward rules that seek to punish Christians for their sincerely held religious beliefs, including biblical beliefs on marriage and sexuality.
The Texas Legislature must take action to pass specific religious freedom protection for all Texas occupational license and certificate holders, which includes attorneys, counselors, teachers, doctors, nurses, pharmacists, cosmetologists, CPAs (more than 50 in total). The Texas Professional Protection Act (SB 17 by Sen. Perry/HB 2827 by Rep. King) ensures the State of Texas does not punish a license holder by revoking or denying a license because of a person’s sincerely held religious beliefs.
The bill specifically amends the Texas Occupations Code to prohibit occupational licensing boards from adopting any rule, regulation, policy, or penalty that unreasonably limits or burdens a person's sincerely held religious belief, freedom of speech, or freedom of association.
The Texas Professional Protection Act is a targeted approach to protect religious freedom, building on bipartisan efforts in previous sessions to pass the Pastor Protection Act and the Freedom to Serve Children Act. SB 17 passed out of the Texas Senate State Affairs Committee with bipartisan support and could be voted on the Senate floor as early as next week.
No Texas professional should ever lose their license or certificate – their very livelihood– because of their Christian faith. Take action to contact your State Senator and State Representative in support of the Texas Professional Protection Act to support religious freedom for all Texas professionals.
